Filed Under: Conversations I Don’t Want to Have
From the side of the screen popped an image of a woman I did not want to see. My mind raced to all the things because both sons have been using my computer during these days of virtual learning. My husband and I scanned the history of web pages. Nothing looked out of the ordinary. Thankfully we realized how to block that site. Unfortunately, that morning’s breakfast conversation was soberly about Good Pictures, Bad Pictures, a picture book for ages 3-6 yo. There’s another for 7-11yo of the same title. We own them both. I hate that we must have these conversations but the books make it easier.
What Else We’re Reading
Better than Before - a book on habits but different from any other habits book I’ve read. The author takes into account personalities and how that flavors the way we do - or don’t do - what we want. For the first time, I’m realizing one of my struggles with exercise is because I’m an Obliger. Meeting others’ expectations is quite easy while meeting my own proves more difficult. All day long I will keep promises and help others but keeping a promise to myself is another story.
Wings of Fire - disappointed. Our teen introduced us to this YA fiction. My husband has read aloud this series to our youngest children, ages 10 and 7, and recommended these aplenty. Currently they are reading the newest book, number 13 in the series. The series has been an innocent story of dragons interacting until this final book. The author snuck in a same sex attraction between two of the dragons.
Free Burma Rangers Documentary
A world traveling college friend recommended the documentary Free Burma Rangers for my 15 year old son. It’s a story of an Army Ranger who went to civil war torn Burma to help as humanitarian aid. Lessons he learned for over 20 years prepared him for an invitation to Iraq and now Syria. The clincher? He’s taken his family to all these dangerous places and his kids love it. My heart was broken and tears flowed as we watched. There is blood and injustice so I’m not recommending this for sensitive hearts. The main character is a Jesus follower and he shares faith stories as well. Caused much reflection on gratitude for me. Check the action filled trailer.
In the Kitchen This Week
Halved this brioche recipe - then made half of that with raspberry preserves in a fun twist and the other half as cinnamon rolls. I love the Pioneer Woman’s cinnamon rolls but this brioche is a notch above.
Bringing Joy
Our Caroline Joy turned ten today. It might go down as the best birthday, ever...even in quarantine. We had a “CJ Parade” instead of a party. The neighbors honked as they passed all day and many brought gifts and cards. During the dinner hour school friends came by and it was fun for all - young and old.
Also bringing joy is eating al fresco. I bought patio furniture. Long story short: God provided through a neighbor who was selling. With perfect spring weather, we have enjoyed lingering moments at the table because we’re not rushing to swim practice. The outdoor table and chairs have brought more joy than ever imagined.
Pools opened back today (in Arkansas) so that is bringing joy to our competitive swimmer.
What’s bringing you joy?
Julie
PS - Since it’s salad season, I’m considering teaching a Zoom Class for knife skills and making homemade salad dressing (a place where naughty ingredients hide). Any interest? Reply to this email.
