Maybe some pics were taken two weeks ago…
Try this broth straining hack: immerse your strainer INTO the pot. Game changer for huge unwieldy pots.
Costco shoppers: Get thee some dried mushrooms!! For several years, I’ve purchased two or three of these canisters in the fall. Toss them in your blender to pulverize. Then use in anything with ground meat. The haters will never find them. It adds a delightful umami without the work of chopping mushrooms…and they’re always in your pantry! When they’re gone from Costco, you won’t see them until next fall.
Breakfast on repeat: perfect oatmeal. Two cups of water to one cup of old fashioned oats. Start low on the stovetop and stir after 5 minutes. Be sure to add salt! And plenty of butter. We also like chopped apples, raisins, soaked & dehydrated pecans with real maple syrup. Likely I have as many mix-ins as actual oatmeal.
My college age son texted this week asking for my quiche recipe. I have one here. But shortly thereafter Rebekah Fowlkes posted a reel of a recipe I apparently told her at one time. I took a screenshot and sent it to my son.
Soup Night Slapdashery: Cooking for Big Crowds Made Simple: working woman hosts 50 college freshman in her home weekly for soup and bread. If you’re cooking for big crowds, this is excellent. She shares her process, starting at 2:30pm & serves at 6pm, where she skimps for time and other excellent tips. It’s not 100% real food but 100% helpful.
Today on Instagram, I shared a simple chore chart that has revolutionized my parenting. The kids flip the orange card on Sunday. They keep the same chore a week and both prefer dealing with animals instead of dishes. We have a lot of dishes.
Beautycounter Back in November!!
I’m excited about this! Some of my stash is running low and there will be a month-long sale, starting November 1. I will share specifics on my other substack: Clean Majors. Looks like the company will be coming back in 2025 but no one knows many details yet.
Pumpkin Roll Made Easy
Last year I shared this super easy pumpkin roll that you make in 9x13 pan. I made it this week and substituted the 2 cups of all purpose flour with 1.5c sourdough starter and 1/2c freshly milled whole wheat flour. Turned out excellent. Dare I say I liked the texture better? Pumpkin is high in fiber and forgiving when playing with the amount of liquid (I added extra eggs to the recipe a friend gave me.)
In Case You Missed It (ICYMI)
Maple Bacon Dressing was a hit. Here are other recipes for homemade dressing. They will keep a couple weeks in the fridge (due to higher acidity). Make a couple this weekend!
Reminder: Health is your greatest wealth. A rich man wants many things. A sick man wants one thing.
Food is medicine.
Life is hard; food doesn’t have to be.

Such a helpful post, thank you! I need the Rebekah Merkle book!
