I had my left thyroid removed for a questionable mass after biopsy many years back, and they are currently monitoring the right side for increased size of a “cystic nodule”. Nothing was ever said as to what may have caused them. Like you said, only treat the symptoms. I have long wondered if something I had been exposed to had caused them.
