Kitchen Tip
Honey is often a beast to remove from a measuring cup. When making granola yesterday I first measured melted coconut oil then honey so the honey would slide right out of the cup! Alternatively you could spray the measuring cup.
Did You Know?
The last time Congress passed major updates to cosmetic laws was 1938? Wut!? How many chemicals have been created since then?!
Until now there’s been virtually no recourse for companies that slew toxic sludge for our bodies. It probably doesn’t mean anything to you — unless your hair fell out, like, permanent baldness, for the people who used Wen Haircare. Note: the shampoo package boasted sulfate-free.
In the last session a bill passed called the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022 (MoCRA). Lindsay Dahl is a writer and activist who breaks it down in her blog here.
Normally I’m not one to rejoice at legislation but this bill seems long overdue. Beautycounter has been a voice in Washington for almost 10 years to call companies up to a higher standard and I’m proud to be a voice to help make that change.
This is a huge (albeit small!) step. Much more work needs to be done in the way of educating people that what goes on our skin matters. The legislation begins to protect those who either can’t or won’t do the homework of investigating ingredients. It brings increased protections for women of color who bear the larger burden of toxic chemical exposures.
Keep educating yourself and reading labels. Our dollars speak louder than words.
Kitchen Update
Demo happened in 6 hours. How long will it take for reconstruction? I’m trying not to think about it. Very grateful for the temporary kitchen we’ve created in the basement.
What are you making these days? I’m always ready to make a new recipe. Reply to this email and let me know.
Life is hard, food doesn’t have to be,
